Self-guided walks for the Curious...

Explore King's Lynn town centre with two self-guided heritage walks with a treasure hunt theme. Discover King's Lynn's "hidden treasures" whilst having a fun day out with family and friends!
Once England's 3rd largest port, King's Lynn dates back to the 12th century. This maritime past has left a wealth of heritage to explore, and stories to tell. Fine old merchants’ houses stretch down to the river between cobbled lanes, and the elegant Custom House overlooks the splendid harbour. There's England's largest chapel to discover as well as the most complete surviving Guildhall, a church with a leaning spire, and The Walks - constructed as a place to promenade, now a glorious park. King's Lynn - a little known gem, don't keep it a secret!

Curious About... King's Lynn

  • An exploration of King's Lynn's town centre with two self-guided heritage walks with an optional treasure hunt. Completing the treasure hunt keeps everyone actively engaged, and urges you to look up, down and every which-way - so you won't miss out on any of the town's treasures.
    Explore, Discover, and Enjoy!
  • Most clues are chosen for their historical value, so you'll learn about the diverse culture, significant people and extraordinary events which have influenced King's Lynn in becoming what it is today.
  • This is an outdoor, unsupervised activity - so you can go at a pace which suits you, whilst keeping you healthy!
  • A Curious About walk is a fun and social activity for all the family and friends. Different people can take on different roles - follow the map, identify picture clues, read directions, etc - it's ideal for children from the age of 6, and if you can walk/wheelchair it, you're young enough!
  • The two walks have been designed so that the second one follows on from where the first one ends. Do both, or have a breather and do the second one another day! They both start and finish in the heart of the town - so buses, trains and car parks are easily available to get you there and back.

1. Heritage & River - 1.5 miles / 2.4 kms
King’s Lynn has a glorious heritage, based around The Great Ouse river. This walk passes a museum dedicated to its old fishing community, a magnificent former chapel, a bustling market place, an ancient street, former home to many famous people, a wonderful Guildhall, a stunning Customs House, venerable almshouses, an ancient college, the alley of the Devil, an imposing church – and, oh yes, the river.

2. To The Walks! - 1 mile / 1.6 kms
From the architecturally stunning Town Hall and Old Gaol House, this walk takes you to Tower Gardens where there are seats, flowers, and Greyfriars Tower which leans dramatically to the west. Finally you enter Saint James’ Park, with its colourful flowers and lively fountain. Then it’s onwards to The Walks, where townsfolk have promenaded for more than three hundred years.

Each booklet has a page dedicated to the history of the town and 2 pages summarising each walk with suggestions on what to visit along the way. Walk 1 has 21 clues & walk 2 has 14 - both with detailed directions to follow. There are interesting stories about important people, places & events along the way; detailed instructions on how to find a clue if you're stuck; and a comprehensive map with the routes marked on.

"What a brilliant idea - to explore the history of the town, without having to battle through the shopping centre. The map was a wonderful addition - we'll use it again - the stories along the way were fascinating, and the directions were spot on!"

"Excellent product by the way, really informative and ideal for orientation when visiting a place for the first time."
