Self-guided walks for the Curious...

Explore Stratford-Upon-Avon town centre with two self-guided heritage walks with a treasure hunt theme. Discover Stratford-Upon-Avon's "hidden treasures" whilst having a fun day out with family and friends!
Stratford-Upon-Avon is a beautiful olde-worlde town with timber-framed buildings and large open spaces. Sitting in the middle are the world-famous Royal Shakespeare and Swan theatres, homages to the poet and playwright William Shakespeare who was born, baptised and buried in Stratford. The theatres in turn overlook the gorgeous River Avon which wends its way gently through the town, bounded by parks and gardens, and fed by a busy canal. See the 16th century school which Shakespeare is said to have attended, a variety of museums, and the Old Town where time has stood still for many a year.

Curious About... Stratford-Upon-Avon

  • An exploration of Stratford-Upon-Avon's town centre with two self-guided heritage walks with an optional treasure hunt. Completing the treasure hunt keeps everyone actively engaged, and urges you to look up, down and every which-way - so you won't miss out on any of the town's treasures.
    Explore, Discover, and Enjoy!
  • Most clues are chosen for their historical value, so you'll learn about the diverse culture, significant people and extraordinary events which have influenced Stratford-Upon-Avon in becoming what it is today.
  • This is an outdoor, unsupervised activity - so you can go at a pace which suits you, whilst keeping you healthy!
  • A Curious About walk is a fun and social activity for all the family and friends. Different people can take on different roles - follow the map, identify picture clues, read directions, etc - it's ideal for children from the age of 6, and if you can walk/wheelchair it, you're young enough!
  • The two walks have been designed so that the second one follows on from where the first one ends. Do both, or have a breather and do the second one another day! They both start and finish in the heart of the town - so buses, trains and car parks are easily available to get you there and back.

1. Town and Canal - 1.5 miles / 2.4 kms
From the modern, bustling Bancroft Gardens you soon enter the leisurely world of long boats and locks - a hidden treasure in the heart of Stratford. From here it’s back to an ancient street, home to Shakespeare’s birthplace and carefree tourists. Via some lesser-known streets packed with interest, you will pass yet more heritage, before arriving back in front of Stratford’s most imposing theatre.

2. Old Town - 1 mile / 1.6 kms
From Stratford’s Royal Shakespeare Theatre, walk alongside the River Avon a while, before moving into the Old Town. Here it’s quieter, giving you time to soak up the atmosphere of an ancient place. Visit some Memorial Gardens and a park which was once home to a Saxon monastery. Finally you arrive at Holy Trinity Church, Shakespeare’s last resting place, alongside the beautiful, and peaceful River Avon.

Each booklet has a page dedicated to the history of the town and 2 pages summarising each walk with suggestions on what to visit along the way. Walk 1 has 21 clues & walk 2 has 14 - both with detailed directions to follow. There are interesting stories about important people, places & events along the way; detailed instructions on how to find a clue if you're stuck; and a comprehensive map with the routes marked on.

"I loved the walks - did them on my own, as I had a weekend to myself. I expected lots to do with Shakespeare (which there was!) but hadn't expected the really unusual canal, which is tucked away so it's difficult to see - but very interesting. Brilliant, thanks."

"Hi Robert and Sue. Just got home from work and the booklets arrived today. Many thanks, they are great. Kind regards."
